Dean MartinJune 7th marks the birthday of one of America's most popular entertainers, singer, actor, and comedian, the late Dean Martin. He was born Dino Crocetti in 1917 into an Italian family who'd settled in Steubenville, Ohio. Just after the war, he met Jerry Lewis at a club where they were both performing, and a firm friendship and a music comedy double act quickly developed. Dean's ensuing solo career fulfilled his desire to become a more serious actor, and in all, he made eighty-five films and TV productions. As a singer, he had hits with songs such as "That's Amore,"Volare,", "Everybody Loves Somebody," "Memories Are Made of This," and "Gentle on My Mind." We'll be remembering him by playing many of his songs throughout the day. Click on his picture for more.

Sir Tom JonesJune 7th sees the birthday of a man who's been wowing us since the mid-'60s, Sir Tom Jones. Playing in a club in the Welsh mining village of Cwmtillery one night, he was spotted by Gordon Mills, a talent manager and fellow Welshman based in London. Mills renamed Thomas Woodward Tom Jones, and he found him a record contract with Decca. He hit the big time with the international hit It's Not Unusual. Then followed a torrent of bestsellers: What's New Pussycat?, Thunderball, The Green, Green Grass of Home, I Have Nothing, Delilah, Help Yourself, and She's a Lady, among them. We'll be celebrating his birthday by playing many of his songs throughout the day. Click on his picture for more.
